Keeping Pets Safe This Christmas!

Here are some useful points for keeping your pets safe during this christmas:

“Trees and plants

  • Real Christmas trees are mildly toxic to some animals and the oils can be an irritant so artificial trees could be the best choice. Be aware these can still harm your pets if they like to chew, though.  Consider buying a smaller tree and raising it off the floor.
  • We all think about trees and decorations being spikey for children but they can be a hazard for pets too. Needles may get stuck in claws and throats and decorations may be very tempting to chew and then shatter, causing more hazards.
  • Cords and lights may cause a chewing and tangling hazard for pets.
  • Always make sure you shut your pets away from trees (artificial and real) and decorations whilst you are out of the house.
  • Mistletoe and Holly are both poisonous and should be kept out of the way of all pets (and children!)

Food

  • Lots of ‘human’ food is very bad for pets so never be tempted to share your Christmas dinner with them. Treat your pets by giving them pet specific treats and maybe a new toy.
  • Never feed your pets poultry carcasses as the bones may split once swallowed.
  • Keep your pets away from things we would consider treats – chocolate and grapes (and also raisins and sultanas) can be poisonous as can onions and garlic. They will be more than happy with their own treats.

Presents

  • Pets do not make good Christmas presents so please don’t be tempted. It is a disruptive time of the year with noise and people and if you have issues it can be difficult to get a vet’s help. If your child is very keen for a pet then get them a book on caring for it for Christmas and then think about getting one once all the decorations are put away for the year.
  • It can be fun to give your pet presents and a stocking for Christmas, but do make sure you buy them from a pet shop/vets and that your toy or treat is designed specifically for your pet.

Noise and disruption

  • Think about visitors – cats and dogs can get very upset with lots of people coming in and out of the house.  Make sure they have a quiet area where they can get peace and quiet and be surrounded by familiar things. Make sure they have access to water.
  • Fireworks at New Year can be very upsetting for cats and dogs. Make sure you walk dogs early in the day and shut cats in for the night. You can purchase special suits for your dog to wear and playing music can help sooth your pets.” quoted from http://www.netmums.com/lifestyle/pets/

Information on Romiley!

Having lived in Romiley for over 15 years and my husband all his life! I know quite a lot about the town itself and am very pleased to be apart of the community ! I love all the local walks around Chadkirk , Werneth Low,  around Guywood, Church Lane  ,  the canal and many more  ! Many dogs have enjoyed these walks .

Between Marple and Romiley is Etherow Country Park the biggest country park in Stockport ! I can walk to this from my house so I am very lucky!

I would like to share some information on Romiley-

History – “For centuries it was an agricultural area, until the late Victorian era, when it became a residential area, with a small district centre. There are four main schools: Romiley Primary School, Bredbury Green Primary and Greave Primary School, which is on the border with Woodley. Catholic education is provided at St Christophers Catholic Primary School in Romiley. Secondary education is provided by Werneth School and Harrytown Catholic High School. Romiley also has its own theatre, the Romiley Forum” From – .http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romiley

Chadkirk Chapel is a lovely place to visit in Romiley as well with dogs and children . Events are held regularly throughout the year at the estate .

“A beautifully restored 14th century chapel set in the heart of Chadkirk Country Estate.

Relax in the peace and tranquillity of the setting and learn more about the history of the chapel, with the legends that link it to 7th century missionary, St Chad.

Enjoy a walk through the surrounding picturesque woodland and along the Peak Forest Canal before stopping for refreshments inside the chapel.” – From http://www.stockport.gov.uk/services/leisureculture/visitstockport/museumsandgalleries/chadkirkchapelcountryestate/

Cat Facts!

“1. There are more than 500 million domestic cats in the world, with 33 different breeds.

2. Cats “paw” or “knead” (repeatedly treading on a spot – sometimes its owner) to mark their territory. Cats sweat through the bottom of their paws and rub off the sweat as a marking mechanism.

3. Cat urine glows in the dark when a black light shines on it. If you think your cat or kitten has had an accident in your home, use a black light to find the mishap.

4. The print on a cat’s nose has a unique ridged pattern, like a human fingerprint.

5. 25% of cat owners admit to blow drying their cat’s hair after a bath.

6. If your cat is near you, and her tail is quivering, this is the greatest expression of love your cat can give you.

7. If your cat is thrashing its tail, she is in a bad mood – time for you to keep your distance!

8. Only domestic cats hold their tails straight up while walking. Wild cats hold their tails horizontally or tucked between their legs while walking.

9. During her productive life, one female cat could have more than 100 kittens. A single pair of cats and their kittens can produce as many as 420,000 kittens in just 7 years.

10. Sir Isaac Newton, discoverer of the principles of gravity, also invented the cat door.

11. The more you talk to your cat, the more it will speak to you.

12. Kittens begin dreaming when they are over one week old.

13. A group of kittens is called a “kindle.” A group of grown cats is called a “clowder.” A male cat is called a “tom,” a female cat is called a “molly” or “queen”, and young cats are called “kittens.”

14. Cats spend 30% of their waking hours grooming themselves.

15. Each year Americans spend four billion dollars on cat food. That’s one billion dollars more than they spend on baby food!

16. Cats can make over 100 vocal sounds, while dogs can only make 10.

17. The majority of cats do not have any eyelashes.

18. Cats have been used to deliver mail: In Belgium in 1879, 37 cats were used to deliver mail to villages. However they found that the cats were not disciplined enough to keep it up.

19. In a lifetime, the average house cat spends approximately 10,950 hours purring.

20. A cat’s jaws cannot move sideways.

21. Cats rarely meow at other cats.

22. When cats are happy, they may squeeze their eyes shut.

23. Cats don’t use their voice’s natural frequency range to verbally communicate feelings such as affection, anger, hunger, boredom, happiness and fear – this would be inaudible to humans as this frequency is much lower than humans can hear. Some researchers believe cats may have learned we can’t hear them in their natural range and have
adapted so they can relate to us on our terms.

24. The reason for the lack of mouse-flavored cat food is due to the fact that the test subjects (cats, naturally!) did not like it.

25. Cats see so well in the dark because their eyes actually reflect light. Light goes in their eyes, and is reflected back out. This means that their eyes actually work almost like built-in flashlights.”
