When looking on the internet a while back I found a great article on a walk around Chadkirk and here it is, quoted from http://www.marple-uk.com/chadkirk.htm . At Aussie Dog Care we enjoyed this historic walk and the information on marple uk was fantastic on informing me about Chadkirk and the surrounding areas past.
“1) On leaving the Car Park adjacent to Rose Hill station make your way back to Stockport Road, cross the zebra crossing and turn left. After about 100 yards turn right into Marple Hall Drive. Follow this road for about 400 yards until it makes a right angle turn.
2) Proceed straight ahead, past the site of Marple Hall. This stately mansion was where John Bradshawe lived as a young man. In later life in his role as President of the High Court of Justice he signed King Charles I death warrant.
Unfortunately in the 1950s, after the caretaker died, the vandals moved in and reduced the building to a ruin in a matter of months.
The ground falls away steeply to your right and although there are a number of paths leading down, follow the main path alongside the edge of the playing fields of Marple Hall School.
Through the trees you will be able to see the River Goyt in the valley. The Goyt and the Tame combine near Stockport to form the River Mersey.
3) The path eventually drops down to Dooley Lane. Turn right past the Garden Centre and over Otterspool Bridge. This was the extreme boundary of the old forest of Macclesfield. After a short distance turn right past the car park and follow the road to Chadkirk Chapel.
Chadkirk has the distinction, unlike Marple, of being mentioned in the Domesday Book. The whole manor was 3 miles long and 11/2 miles wide of which most was woodland. The value was assessed to be worth 10 shillings.
4)Although legend has it that Chadkirk is associated with the 7th century missionary St Chad, the present Chapel dates back to the early 16th century although it has been restored on a number of occasions since then. The building is now owned by Stockport Council and is open to the public on Saturday and Sundays between 1.00 pm and 5.00 pm (admission free). There is an audio/visual show giving the history of the chapel and St. Chad.
Adjoining the chapel is a farm which is also open to the public at certain times.
Follow the road past the farm. On the left as you go up the hill you will pass St Chad’s Well and an information board gives you details of this historic site.
At the top of the hill some stone steps on the right take you up to the canal.
5)At this point you have the first choice of route. See below for alternative Route B.
On reaching the canal turn right along the towpath. As you will see the canal has been cut out of the steep hillside and its construction over 200 years ago is a monument to the skill of the canal engineers of the time with the limited resources available to them.
6)Opposite the canalside factory is a path on the right for alternative Route C. See bottom of page for details.
Shortly after passing the factory the canal enters the 308 yard Hyde Bank tunnel which although only being a short tunnel has no towpath requiring horsedrawn narrowboats to be legged through. Take the path over the top passing a farm before bearing right and following a steepish path down to rejoin the canal.
The canal continues its path along the side of the hill until, after passing under a bridge, it enters a relatively narrow section for a hundred yards or so. This was formerly Rose Hill tunnel which collapsed over 100 years ago and rather than rebuild it they opened it up. In 1997 the embankment became unstable and had to be strengthened, substantially, at a cost of £300,000.
Just ahead the canal crosses the Marple Aqueduct. This magnificent structure built 200 years ago stands 100ft above the river Goyt. In the early 1960s this structure was faced with closure when a severe frost so badly damaged it that it was uncertain whether it would ever reopen to navigation. As a consequence the flight of locks also fell into disrepair and it was only the sterling efforts of a group of enthusiasts who formed the Peak Forest Canal Society that eventually both the aqueduct and locks were saved.
7)Continue alongside the locks until you reach lock 7 where you cross the bridge close to the bottom gates and head for a footpath marked with two metal stakes.
This path, after about 150 yards, meets up with Winnington Road. Cross over and make your way up Grosvenor Road. At the junction with Manor Road continue straight ahead to a footpath known as Seven Stiles. The stiles have long gone but the footpath happily remains. Follow the path which after about 200 yards crosses a road before leading down to another path. After a short distance you follow the boundary of Marple Cricket Club.
Eventually the path terminates on Bowden Lane. Turn right and over the railway bridge. Turn left onto Dale Road and follow this to Stockport Road. The car park is just across the road.”

“1. Be aware of your energy and body language while walking dog.
Make sure you are communicating a message that says, ‘I am the pack leader!’ Keep your head up and your shoulders back. Think positive thoughts and envision the dog walk going well. You might be surprised at the results.
2. Keep the dog leash short, but not tight.
You’ve heard me tell this to people on the show time and time again. This simple tip can save you a lot of headache. Flexi-leashes and other longer leashes make it harder for you to communicate with your dog and easier for her to go wherever she wants. But, don’t forget, it’s also important to keep the dog leash loose. If you make a correction following a problem behavior, it should be quick, and then the dog leash should be returned to the relaxed state.
3. Position the dog collar at the top of the neck.
If you’ve ever seen a sledding dog, you’ll notice that the harness is around the lower part of the dog’s neck, near the shoulders. Why? This is where the dog’s pulling power is located. You’re actually helping your dog to pull you around if you have the collar placed there. Instead, position it on the upper neck, which is the most sensitive area. If you’re having trouble keeping the collar in the correct spot, check out my Illusion collar, which is designed to keep the collar from slipping.
4. Film the dog walk.
Ask a friend or family member to film you walking the dog. It may be easier to see your problem areas after the fact. What’s your posture like? How do you react when your dog misbehaves? Are you putting tension on the dog leash? These are the types of things to look for while you watch. If you don’t have access to a camera, ask someone to walk with you and then share what they noticed.
5. Enlist the help of balanced dogs.
If your dog barks or lunges at other dogs that you pass on the walk, take time to do just that activity with another dog you trust. That way, you can practice remaining calm and correcting your dog. Then, when the dog problem arises when you’re not expecting it, you’ll feel better able to handle it, and that confidence will be communicated to your dog.
6. Practice the walk!
You and your dog won’t get better if you don’t go out there and do it! Celebrate every success along the way. Learn from the bad days, but don’t dwell on them. And then one day, you’ll find you’ve done it! You’ve mastered the walk!”

We visit Marple a lot at Aussie Dog Care when going to Brabyns Park , Middlewood way, Canal or the pet shop! So we would like to share with you some lovely information about Marple and its districts from a wonderful site!
“The District of Marple is situated in the South East corner of Greater Manchester in the United Kingdom. It adjoins the Cheshire/Derbyshire boundary and includes the “villages” of Marple, Mellor, Hawk Green, High Lane, Marple Bridge, Moor End, Strines and the hamlet of Mill Brow. The District covers just over 11 square miles of attractive countryside, ranging from heavily wooded valleys to hill-top moorland. It rises from around 300ft above sea level at the lowest point on the River Goyt to just over 1000ft at Cobden Edge. On a clear day it is possible to view the four counties of Cheshire, Derbyshire, Lancashire and Yorkshire from the top of these hills. The Peak District countryside surrounding Marple offers many pleasant walks and rambles, there being 66 mile of public footpaths in the Urban District alone.
Postwar residential development in the District has resulted in an increase in the population from 12,880 in 1950 to approximately 27,000 in the early 1990’s. This growth and the resulting increase in demand has brought improved shopping facilities, including the pedestrianisation of Market Street and Derby Way and the development on the former Hollins Mill site has made Marple into an attractive little “town” without losing too much of its “village” identity.
The Marple Library, located in the Memorial Park, occupies two floors and adds to the many benefits available to residents and visitors alike. In addition to having approximately 40,000 books available, it has Exhibition and Meeting Room facilities, Study Room and Reference Sections, including Local History.
Approximately 5,000 of Marple’s 7,000 acres are included in the Greater Manchester Green Belt. The District is served by two railway stations, Marple and Rose Hill, which give the visitor and resident ease of access to most parts of the North West. The District also has a good bus transport service, provided by Greater Manchester Transport. The former rail link between Macclesfield, Bollington and Marple, closed in 1970 , is now converted to an attractive footpath and bridleway know as The Middlewood Way.
The River Goyt flows though the District from south to north, meeting its tributary the River Etherow at a point near Compstall, appropriately named “Water Meetings”. It then flows down through Marple Dale and on towards Stockport where it becomes the River Mersey at its confluence with the river Tame under the M60 at Portwood. Manchester Canoe Club, founded in 1933, have their own site on the River Goyt in Marple and regularly hold slalom competitions and river races there. The Peak Forest Canal meets the Macclesfield Canal in Marple and with a flight of 16 locks, the second steepest in the country, and a 300ft wide aqueduct provide the main attraction and define the character of the town. A bit about me –
I have lived in Romiley for 15 years so I know the area and surrounding local areas extremely well . I have two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels of my own and I am a Kennel Club Registered Breeder. I am a strong animal lover and strive to give the best care to any type of animal . I also have 3 children all of whom help out with the love and cuddles regularly ( all older) . Who love the visitors who come to stay.
If you are worried about your dogs when I am walking them do not fret as I regularly update on facebook and twitter. I run the business myself and just me will be caring for your animal when needed as I do not employ any third parties.
