About Marple

We visit Marple a lot at Aussie Dog Care when going to Brabyns Park , Middlewood way, Canal or the pet shop! So we would like to share with you some lovely information about Marple and its districts from a wonderful site!

“The District of Marple is situated in the South East corner of Greater Manchester in the United Kingdom. It adjoins the Cheshire/Derbyshire boundary and includes the “villages” of Marple, Mellor, Hawk Green, High Lane, Marple Bridge, Moor End, Strines and the hamlet of Mill Brow. The District covers just over 11 square miles of attractive countryside, ranging from heavily wooded valleys to hill-top moorland. It rises from around 300ft above sea level at the lowest point on the River Goyt to just over 1000ft at Cobden Edge. On a clear day it is possible to view the four counties of Cheshire, Derbyshire, Lancashire and Yorkshire from the top of these hills. The Peak District countryside surrounding Marple offers many pleasant walks and rambles, there being 66 mile of public footpaths in the Urban District alone.

Postwar residential development in the District has resulted in an increase in the population from 12,880 in 1950 to approximately 27,000 in the early 1990’s. This growth and the resulting increase in demand has brought improved shopping facilities, including the pedestrianisation of Market Street and Derby Way and the development on the former Hollins Mill site has made Marple into an attractive little “town” without losing too much of its “village” identity.

The Marple Library, located in the Memorial Park, occupies two floors and adds to the many benefits available to residents and visitors alike. In addition to having approximately 40,000 books available, it has Exhibition and Meeting Room facilities, Study Room and Reference Sections, including Local History.

Approximately 5,000 of Marple’s 7,000 acres are included in the Greater Manchester Green Belt. The District is served by two railway stations, Marple and Rose Hill, which give the visitor and resident ease of access to most parts of the North West. The District also has a good bus transport service, provided by Greater Manchester Transport. The former rail link between Macclesfield, Bollington and Marple, closed in 1970 , is now converted to an attractive footpath and bridleway know as The Middlewood Way.

The River Goyt flows though the District from south to north, meeting its tributary the River Etherow at a point near Compstall, appropriately named “Water Meetings”. It then flows down through Marple Dale and on towards Stockport where it becomes the River Mersey at its confluence with the river Tame under the M60 at Portwood. Manchester Canoe Club, founded in 1933, have their own site on the River Goyt in Marple and regularly hold slalom competitions and river races there. For more details, visit the Manchester Canoe Club site.

The Peak Forest Canal meets the Macclesfield Canal in Marple and with a flight of 16 locks, the second steepest in the country, and a 300ft wide aqueduct provide the main attraction and define the character of the town. Follow this link for more details of the Rivers and Canals.” Taken from http://www.marple-uk.com/Marple.htm

The Countryside Code

On our walks at Aussie Dog Care with home boarding and dog walking clients we sometimes like to go off the beaten track in and around our local area of Romiley, Stockport. When you are in the countryside you have to abide by a certain code this being – The Countryside Code.  It is set for all members of the public to respect and enjoy the countryside.

Code Logo from http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/
Code Logo from http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/

This is the Countryside Code:

  • Be safe, plan ahead and follow any signs
    1. Take maps/guidebooks
    2. Be prepared for changes in weather
    3. Check the weather so you know what to expect
    4. Let someone know where you are going, how long you plan to be
    5. Learn signs and symbols used in the countryside
  • Leave gates and property as you find them
    1. Farmers may leave gates open to allow their animals to move – so leave an open gate open, and a closed gate closed
    2. Contact the local authority if you see a sign which may be misleading or illegal (e.g. Private, no entry – on a public footpath)
    3. Follow paths where crops are growing
    4. Use gates or stiles if possible, rather than climbing walls or fences, to avoid damage
    5. Don’t disturb ruins or historic sites
    6. Don’t interfere with machinery or livestock
  • Protect plants and animals and take your litter home
    1. Litter and leftover food spoils the beauty of the countryside
    2. Don’t damage, destroy or remove features such as rocks, plants and trees
    3. Give wild animals and farm animals plenty of space as they can behave unpredictably
    4. Be careful not to drop matches or smouldering cigarettes.
  • Keep dogs under close control
    1. By law, you must control your dog so that it does not disturb or scare farm animals or wildlife
    2. Farmers are, by law, entitled to destroy a dog that injures or worries their animals
    3. Always clean up after your dog and get rid of the mess responsibly
  • Consider other people
    1. Respect the needs of local people
    2. When riding a bike or driving a vehicle, slow down for horses, walkers and livestock and give them plenty of room
    3. By law, cyclists must give way to walkers and horse-riders on bridleways
    4. Support the rural economy – for example, buy your supplies from local shops

Taken from http://www.thethreepeakschallenge.co.uk/ . Even though this is taken from Three Peaks Challenge this code applies for any walk in the countryside.

Tailored Dog Walks

I  offer Dog Walking for owners who may be out at work all day , busy , someone elderly that would like companionship from an animal  but needs help with walking the dog or if you just feel like going out all day for relaxation without the dog !

At Aussie Dog Care I promote myself in being a friendly , reliable and professional dog walker. I will always try to walk your dog in an area that they  know and is suitable for the dog and which you recommend.

We aim to give the right amount exercise desired by the breed making sure your dog is happy and tired when you come back home . At Aussie Dog Care we also tailor all walks to what you as an owner desire for you dogs.

On an ordinary Aussie Dog Care walk we will collect your dog from your home at a time you have given and walk for the specific time you have asked for perhaps longer. If your dog is wet or muddy I will dry all dogs as no muddy paw prints are left on the floor! If you are away at work we can when asked water any plants , bring in post etc.

Aussie Dog Care as a business promotes itself in being a small family run business that walks local around Romiley. Dogs are never walked in a pack as I totally disagree with this method of walking. Aussie Dog Care loves itself reasonably small and local .

A bit about me –

I have lived in Romiley for 15 years so I know the area and surrounding local areas extremely well . I have two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels of my own and I am a Kennel Club Registered Breeder. I am a strong animal lover and strive to give the best care to any type of animal . I also have 3 children all of whom help out with the love and cuddles regularly ( all older) .  Who love the visitors who come to stay.

If you are worried about your dogs when I am walking them do not fret as I regularly update on facebook and twitter. I run the business myself and just me will be caring for your animal when needed as I do not employ any third parties.  Aussie Dog Care is for all your animal needs covering Cheshire , Tameside , Areas of the Peak District and Stockport.

Some walks at Aussie Dog Care.

At Aussie Dog Care when walking home boarding clients and dog walking clients I like to stick to local walks. Here I am sharing with you some lovely walks around my area which dogs enjoy as well as me!

Etherow Park taken from ( http://www.pittdixon.go-plus.net/compstall/map-compstall-navigation.gif )

At Etherow Park I like to park in Compstall and walk to the weir , through Ernocroft wood and back to the Café ( which serves lovely coffee and cakes ) . However you can turn this walk into a much longer and tiring ( for me and the dogs) route by walking past the weir cottages on your right , you can walk up to Werneth Low Park from here but also around the back of Etherow Country Park. Lots of streams are here for doggies to paddle in and some great picnic spots!

I can reach Etherow Country Park by foot which is why I am quite lucky as the dogs all enjoy the walk to and from the Park especially when the dogs need that extra bit of a walk!

Werneth Low Country Park.

Werneth Low Country Park  is another fantastic place to go with your dogs it has the Tameside Trial and the much longer Trans Pennine Trail passing through it! I am very lucky to be able to walk to Werneth Low Country Park from my house and the dogs have a fantastic time!

“The country park extends for 80 hectares (200 acres) across the Northern and Western slopes of Werneth Low. Only 9.5 miles from the city centre of Manchester, the area is both a haven for wildlife and an area where visitors can find peace and relaxation. The park’s location provides panoramic views across Manchester and beyond to Liverpool. The dark blue silhouette of the Welsh mountains can often be seen on clear days, as can the Pennine hills close by.”

We also love walks around Marple Canal and Brabyns Park! Brabyns Park is fantastic for socializing your dogs and allowing them that wind down off the lead … I know my clients enjoy it !

When the sun is out Brabyns can make for a fantastic picnic spot! But you will have to keep the dogs away from the lovely food and it also gets very busy around midday in summer months!

Chadkirk Chapel and Country estate is a beautiful scenic place to take any member of the family. It is a stones throw away from Romiley Village and a mere 15 minute walk from my home I love having this area of Biologic Importance and beauty so close to home. Many dogs have enjoyed the walks around the estate and surrounding walks toward the garden centre.

“Chadkirk Country Estate is a haven for wildlife, helped by sympathetic and environmentally friendly ways of maintaining the various habitats.

The meadows, pastures, woodland fringes and the gardens all provide valuable food and shelter to a wide variety of species including birds, invertebrates and small mammals.

Kirk Wood and Little Wood are both SBIs (Sites of Biological Importance) and the entire Estate has been designated as a LNR (Local Nature Reserve).” From – http://www.stockport.gov.uk/
