Protecting Your Dog Against Fleas and Ticks

At Aussie Dog Care we know the difficulties of removing Fleas and Ticks so hopefully this information will help protect your dogs against Fleas and Ticks!

Flea and Ticks are normally around during warmer summer months however the odd few do seem to reappear from time to time as we know!

Below Text Quoted from http://www.cesarsway.com/

“Ticks survive the winter in microclimates, and after the thaw a feeding and breeding female tick can lay hundreds to thousands of eggs at one time2. Fleas can survive freezing temperatures on wild or feral animals, cocooned as immature pupae, or inside houses and buildings3. With temperatures in the 50s, 60’s, and even 70s, an early spring also means an early season for these bloodsucking parasites.

It’s practically impossible to keep fleas and ticks completely at bay. But there are some steps you can take to try and minimize the opportunities for contact with your pet.

Fleas.Wildlife, including opossums, coyotes, raccoons, and skunks, and even untreated cats and dogs can deposit flea eggs into a yard. It may be possible to reduce flea infestations by limiting the access these animals have around your house and yard. Your local nursery or garden professional may have some advice on what to plant or other strategies to discourage animal trespassers.

Ticks It can be helpful for pet owners to alter the landscape around their homes to make it unsuitable for ticks and their hosts. For example, keep the lawn mowed, remove leaf litter accumulations and prune shrubs and trees.4

Contact a professional pest specialist if you have any questions regarding environmental treatments for ticks.

Use a Flea and Tick Control Product

Despite your efforts to reduce the fleas and ticks in your yards, our pets may still be exposed to these parasites, so you should take measures to help protect them. Treat all dogs and cats in the household with a flea and tick control product. One untreated pet can lead to a flea infestation in the household.

FRONTLINE® brand products can help protect your dog from unexpected flea and tick sources by killing adult fleas, eggs and larvae, and all stages of ticks. FRONTLINE Plus not only stops existing flea infestations, but also prevents the establishment of new infestations.

Consistency is key. Even one missed dose of your monthly flea and tick control can set the stage for a flea infestation that takes months to resolve, or put your pet at greater risk of exposure to a tick borne disease. So be sure you treat your pet now and continue monthly applications throughout the rest of the year.”

National Trust: Lyme Park Disley

At Aussie Dog Care we love regular trips to Lyme Park in Disley . If you scroll down below you can see our amazing day trip recently ay Lyme Park Disley , dog walking ! I actually used to live in Lyme Park! You can go on some many walks at Lyme Park in Disley and all the dogs are very tired out after their trip!

“Lyme Park is a large estate located south of DisleyCheshire. The estate is managed by the National Trust and consists of a mansion house surrounded by formal gardens, in a deer park in the Peak District National Park.[1] The house is the largest in Cheshire,[2] and is designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building.[3]

The estate was granted to Sir Thomas Danyers in 1346 and passed to the Leghs of Lyme by marriage in 1388. It remained in the possession of the Legh family until 1946 when it was given to the National Trust. The house dates from the latter part of the 16th century. Modifications were made to it in the 1720s by Giacomo Leoni, who retained some of the Elizabethan features and added others, particularly the courtyard and the south range. It is difficult to classify Leoni’s work at Lyme, as it contains elements of both Palladian and Baroque styles.[a] Further modifications were made by Lewis Wyatt in the 19th century, especially to the interior. Formal gardens were created and developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The house, gardens and park have been used as locations for filming and they are open to the public. The Lyme Caxton Missal is on display in the Library.” Quoted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyme_Park

Information on Romiley , Stockport .

Having lived in Romiley for over 15 years and my husband all his life! I know quite a lot about the town itself and am very pleased to be apart of the community ! I love all the local walks around Chadkirk , Werneth Low,  around Guywood, Church Lane  ,  the canal and many more  ! Many dogs have enjoyed these walks .

Between Marple and Romiley is Etherow Country Park the biggest country park in Stockport ! I can walk to this from my house so I am very lucky!

I would like to share some information on Romiley-

History – “For centuries it was an agricultural area, until the late Victorian era, when it became a residential area, with a small district centre. There are four main schools: Romiley Primary School, Bredbury Green Primary and Greave Primary School, which is on the border with Woodley. Catholic education is provided at St Christophers Catholic Primary School in Romiley. Secondary education is provided by Werneth School and Harrytown Catholic High School. Romiley also has its own theatre, the Romiley Forum” From – .http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romiley

Chadkirk Chapel is a lovely place to visit in Romiley as well with dogs and children . Events are held regularly throughout the year at the estate .

“A beautifully restored 14th century chapel set in the heart of Chadkirk Country Estate.

Relax in the peace and tranquillity of the setting and learn more about the history of the chapel, with the legends that link it to 7th century missionary, St Chad.

Enjoy a walk through the surrounding picturesque woodland and along the Peak Forest Canal before stopping for refreshments inside the chapel.” – From http://www.stockport.gov.uk/services/leisureculture/visitstockport/museumsandgalleries/chadkirkchapelcountryestate/

The Tangshutt Trail: One of Stockport’s Hidden Gems

Friends of Tangshutt is lottery funded and is a fantastic part of the Romiley community and is the community local ‘green space’ . It is nestled between Cherry Tree and Romiley , one of Stockport’s hidden gems. It is just a short walk from the town centre of Romiley and from Aussie Dog Care’s base. You will find meadows , a wooded valley , stream and playing fields which are used by local schools. In fact a ‘Safe Route to School’ leads you onto the site . It follows the line of the old footpath which used to be in place from Gotherage Lane in Cherry Tree to Compstall Road near the very centre of Romiley.  As part of the site is a Local Nature Reserve you can have a great time with the children or by yourself spotting the local wildlife and variety of plants . The Local Nature Reserve is managed by Stockport Council in a way which protects the wildlife and conserves the area . You can volunteer to help out with Friends of Tangshutt which help with wildlife recording and replanting .

Tangshutt is known by locals as Jimmy’s wood. The unusual name could have been given for a variety of different reasons . Some say it means the fork between two streams and another interpretation could be a wooded valley . I know for a fact the dogs I take , as well as my own , enjoy a paddle in the stream . The land in the past as long been used for farming , old pear trees still stand from those days . The land was passed into management of Stockport Council and for many years Bonfire Night , recently passed , marked a fantastic bonfire and firework display in the meadow all organised by the local Rotary Club .

Children from Romiley Primary School have planted many trees with volunteers from Friends of Tangshutt , Friends of Etherow Park ( another fantastic wildlife heaven to visit in Compstall ) and Stockport Parks Team . These trees will provide free fruit for the community and wildlife there .

For regular jogging , running or keeping fit you can keep to the surfaced path which also links with a public footpath towards Hyde Bank Farm , The Peak Forest Canal , Chadkirk and from there many places ! You can use Tangshutt as a local keep fit for free and there is also a fitness trail along the Tangshutt Trail .

If you want to find out more about Tangshutt and how to get involved being a volunteer ( a rewarding experience ) at this wonderful site please contact Stockport Parks on 0161 217 6111 who can put you in touch with Friends of Tangshutt.

You can find them on the internet also at http://www.stockportgreenspace.org.uk
